Ayurveda, the Indian system of Medicine is derived from two Sanskrit words, Ayus which stands for life and Veda which stands for knowledge or science. Ayurveda is thus, The Science of Life.
Anointing the whole body or a specific part with oil followed by a gentle massage along the circulatory channels for 45 to 60 minutes is called Abhyanga. It is very useful in relieving fatigue, neuro-muscular disorders and sleeplessness; it also improves eyesight, skin tone and bestows healthy skin.
A massage with warm medicated powder in the age-old traditional prescribed method is called Udwarthana. This treatment procedure is effective in weight reduction, enhancing strength and stability and for providing better skin lustre.
In this procedure, the body is treated with medicated steam introduced into a wooden cabin. This is effective in improving the blood circulation, eliminating impurities etc.
Special powder mixed with medicated oil is placed on top of the head, vertex for 20 to 45 minutes. This treatment is helpful in tackling ENT problems, insomnia, migraine etc.
Kizhi means bolus. Here special herbal leaves or powders are smeared in oil and tied up in a muslin. Then massage is done on the whole body or on the affected part with this special bolus, after dipping it in warm oil. Kizhi treatment is very effective in the management of osteoarthritis and arthritis with swelling, spondylosis, sport- injuries, pain, inflammation and stiffness of joints.
This is facial treatment with different kinds of herbal pastes. This is very effective in the removal of wrinkles, blackheads etc. This treatment rejuvenates the facial skin.
This is a Panchakarma treatment in which herbal juices or oils are dripped into the nostrils. This is a cleansing treatment for head and can be done in normal subjects to check pre-mature greying of hair, and to keep the sense organs healthy. It is effective in facial paralysis, sinusitis, in headaches and in psychiatric disorders.
Pizhichil is the treatment of body with warm herbal oils. Warm medicated oil is poured all over the body using a cloth dipped in oil and squeezing it. Simultaneously, gentle harmonised massage is carried out. The process lasts for 45-60 minutes. This treatment is very useful in rheumatic problems, arthritis, paraplegia, hemiplegia, paralysis, sexual weakness and nervous disorders.
In this treatment, medicated oil/ milk / butter- milk is poured on the forehead as per the ailment, in a rhythmic way for 30 to 45 minutes. This is mainly done for de-stressing, removing mental tension, headache, insomnia, and impaired memory.
It is a treatment wherein a ring of herbal mixture is pasted over the lumbar region into which warm medicated oil is poured and allowed to stand for a specified time at a specified temperature. Kati vasti is effective in alleviating pain arising from sciatica, lumbar spondylosis, in numbness of legs,in low back ache.
A similar procedure like kati vasti in the knee region is called janu vasti. Selection of medicated oil varies with the disease manifested and duration of illness. Janu vasti is beneficial in reducing the pain associated with osteoarthritis, stiffness of knee joint.
Similar to kati and janu vasti is a procedure called greeva vasti in the cervical region. It enhances the lubrication of cervical vertebra and its adjacent structures. It helps to diminish pain associated with cervical spondylosis, in neck pain & stiffness, in intervertebral space reduction.
The procedure in which a leather cap is placed over head to hold medicated liquid mixture is called Shiro vasti. It is of immense use in facial paralysis, insomnia and disorders of head.
A special paste made of buttermilk, gooseberry, and other herbs is cooked to a paste consistency and applied on the head. Following which the head is well covered with banana leaf. Slight oil massage is given to the head before and after the procedure. It is highly beneficial in insomnia, psychosomatic disorders, chronic sinusitis, for hair and scalp complaints.
It is a relaxant massage of the region of leg from foot to knee. With warm medicated oil, the massage is carried our stressing on the important marmas or vital points of energy. It enhances the circulation to legs. It softens the skin, removes dryness and numbness of the skin. It is effective in eye complaints, sciatica, rheumatologic and neurological complaints of leg.
